Add as Preferred Source on Google
Let visitors mark your website as a preferred source in Google Search results – with a button you place directly on the page.
Google has launched the "Preferred sources" feature, which lets users mark specific websites as favourite sources within particular topics. Pages marked as preferred sources can appear more prominently in Google Search – including in Top Stories and Discover – for the users who made that choice.
The effect also shows up in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode: if a page marked as a preferred source appears in an AI-generated answer, the same badge is shown there too, so the visitor can see it's a source they've chosen to trust. This module makes it easy for an editor or administrator to place a button that lets visitors add your website as a preferred source on Google, with two ready-made ways to display it: Google's own badge or a button in your website's own look.
Features
- Google's official badge/button
- Custom button – for when the button should blend into your existing design
- Automatic language adaptation of Google's badge based on the page language
- Free choice of text, colour and size when using the custom button with Envision and themes
- Three theme options for Google's badge: Light, Dark, or Automatic, following the visitor's system setting
- Simple configuration directly in the editing view
Value for your organisation
Being visible as a preferred source can bring more, and more relevant, visits from Google over time, as more users mark their favourite sources – and the same badge appears when your website shows up in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, strengthening the visitor's trust even in AI-generated answers. Making it easy for visitors to register your website as a preferred source with a single click increases the chance that they actually do it, rather than having to find the feature on their own in Google's settings.
This is especially important for municipalities and public authorities: many residents search for generic topics such as waste collection, building permits or school choice, and risk getting answers that actually apply to a different municipality. By encouraging residents to mark your municipality specifically as a preferred source, you reduce the risk of them being guided by incorrect or misleading information from another municipality – while also taking active responsibility, as a public authority, for ensuring that correct and authoritative information reaches them.
Suitable for organisations that
- Are a municipality or public authority that wants residents to get the right information
- Publish news or run a blog and want to encourage returning visitors
- Run brand or campaign sites that want to strengthen their visibility in Google over time
- Want to take advantage of Google's new preferred sources feature
